Bizen pottery workshop
October, 2014 Yes. Okayama's most renowned pottery is called Bizen, which is one of the Nihon Rokkoyo (The Six Old Kilns) in Japan. We visited Gallery Shozan in Imbe, Bizen city. The Imbe district is the home of Bizen pottery. The gallery is the largest showroom and store in Bizen City. Visitors can shop, take pottery classes, or having some tea at the cafe. We took a Bizen pottery class (Reservation required).
Surrounded by masterpieces of pottery,
I was immersed in making my own Bizen pottery
As soon as we entered the gallery, we saw many kinds of remarkable Bizen pottery. Masterworks from young artists up to masters who are designated as Living National Treasures are on display and for sale.
After learning about their amazing artwork, we really wanted to make our own Bizen pottery. We really got into creating our own pottery. The staff told us that they would mail us our creations at a later date! We were really looking forward to receiving our work.
Finally, we took a break at the cafe inside the gallery. We had a blissful time drinking coffee out of Bizen pottery cups which enhanced its flavor.
